Andrew's Sermons

Let the words of my mouth  and the meditations of my heart be acceptable in your sight, my lord my God and Redeemer. There was a point, early in the years when I came back to church after a time away, when I had a sense that okay, now I’m Christian, it’s plain sailing from now on, life will be much simpler, there will be fewer trials and tribulations because God is with me. We’re becoming good pals now so it’ll all be fine. Turns out, only some of that was true, And only some of that is true for Joseph. We’re now in the fourth week of our series on his journey and life, so if this was the musical, it would nearly be time for the interval and a chance to stretch your legs, hoping you hadn’t lost the ticket for the drinks you ordered before the show… Last week we heard how Joseph found favour with the Pharoah and saved the people of Egypt from famine by interpreting Pharoah’s dreams. This week we take a step back to the moment before this. In today’s reading, Joseph ...

A sermon for  Easter Sunday            April 17 th  2022 "May the words of my mouth and the whispering of my heart, always find favour, in your presence, Yahweh, my rock, my redeemer." Hallelujah! Christ is risen he is risen indeed! Hallelujah! We're finally here. Today we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ. It all comes down to this day, the greatest day in the church year and this is the day we get all the, 're’s.' resurrection renewal restore reborn and all these re’s are verbs, describing action, this is a day of change, to something new. And today we celebrate the greatest change in our history for two thousand years. And whether we like it or not, change is inevitable and it can be joyful and amazing, but can also be painful and stressful. It was all of these for Jesus And it is also for us sometimes, but a quick thought on this is that our change is ours, if it's hard, it's hard and if someone says t...

Sermon for Sunday 26 th September 2021. Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to Mark.      (Mark 9:38-50) 38 John said to him, “Teacher, we saw someone casting out demons in your name, and we tried to stop him, because he was not following us.”  39 But Jesus said, “Do not stop him; for no one who does a deed of power in my name will be able soon afterward to speak evil of me.  40 Whoever is not against us is for us.  41 For truly I tell you, whoever gives you a cup of water to drink because you bear the name of Christ will by no means lose the reward. 42 “If any of you put a stumbling block before one of these little ones who believe in me, it would be better for you if a great millstone were hung around your neck and you were thrown into the sea.  43 If your hand causes you to stumble, cut it off; it is better for you to enter life maimed than to have two hands and to go to hell, to the unquenchable fire.  45 And...

In name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Amen. Today is the last in our series looking at how the Holy Spirit acts in the Old and New Testaments. Over the weeks we have explored how the Holy Spirit is at work in the Creation of the world, how it is an agent for  Prophecy, Justice, Truth and Inspiration, how it is our advocate and comforter, how it aids in pointing us towards Jesus the Messiah and how it can help us as we seek holiness and become closer to God. The final area we’re exploring is the way the Holy Spirit works to help transform, redeem and save us all. The Holy or Divine Spirit is one with God and the Son in the Trinity, all these aspects of the spirit cannot be separated, prophecy, truth and justice are all interconnected, as is the redeeming power of the Spirit with Jesus. The word redeem is worth explaining, because it can have a few meanings, for example when you take a coupon to the shop for 20p off fairy liquid – other washing up liquids are ava...
